This section documents several commonly asked questions about the Cobalt RaQ4 appliance and also the service offered by GalacNet.
Why should I take this rather than a unlimited domain shared hosting service?
Taking a shared service with unlimited domain can really cut down your cost. But take into consideration that other people who sign up for a "unlimited" domain shared hosting account can create as many sites as you. not to mention they can use as much resources or fight for the same amount of resources as you have. Would you rather be on a deserted island with a chicken and a coconut tree, or would you prefer to be in a chicken farm with 100 coconut trees, but also with half the population of China? The decision is yours.
I never have a dedicated server before! What do I do?
You do what you have always done. Login to the GUI, create your site, upload your site files to FTP, config your DB on phpMyadmin and there you have it.
Why is there no cPanel? If there is no cPanel I can't make the site!
cPanel or for that case any Web GUI is just a tool for you to create records on the server's OS to make it stream your sites. Many people have the misconception that a Web GUI "runs" your server. But in actual fact the Server OS and every other program runs the Web GUI. Things like Webalizer, AwStats, phpMyadmin, PHP, MySQL and etc are not part of your Web GUI, they are only there as links or have been integrated to be accessible from the Web GUI.
Its just a low end PIII, will I get slowed down?
Depends on what you are running or hosting. You don't need a lot of resources to host a website, A Cobalt as documented can run up to 200 sites
I need to transfer my site over but I don’t know if it can handle it... I have 1000GB transfers each day and a 5GB Database and my shared account keeps crashing...
For that kind of operations, you need load balanced servers and not just one server alone. Maybe 5 Servers serving WEB requests and maybe 2 server serving DB requests.. or maybe even more. No single server unless maybe a Quad will save from this kind of establishment.
I need to reboot it, can I do it remotely?
Yes remote reboots can be done over the GU or SSH. If all else fails a manual reboot can be requested at no cost.
Can I run DNS?
Yes, it comes loaded with DNS capabilities, but you need 2 IPs to make it work though.
Is there a uptime guarantee?
You manage your own server, the uptime is as per how you operate your server as you have full control of what to load or what you should not load.
Will I have root access?
Yes.
Can I do or install _______ with a cobalt server?
You can install or run any program as long as the installed program is supported by the applications loaded on the server. For example phpBB forums require a php version of 4 and a MySQL of at least 3.x
The server is a piece of hardware and its the software that it comes with that determines what can be run or what cannot be run.
